Updating your residential address

If you’re getting ready for a move or your residential address has recently changed, the Envoy Global platform can help make sure this information is updated for future cases. The legal team at CIP PC will advise on how you can take appropriate steps, as well as any other legal action that may be needed by you.

Notify the legal team of your residential address change

  1. Update your Account Profile in your Envoy account. This will ensure that your new address populates into any new cases open in your account.

  2. Post a new message to the legal team in the Communication Center as soon as possible to notify them of your residential address change. Include the following information:
    1. Your new residential address
    2. The date/tentative date of your move
  3. The legal team may respond with instructions to notify the government of your change of address. Follow any applicable steps provided by the legal team, if necessary.

    💡 If a case is currently open in your account and the legal team has begun their case preparation, then you will not see your address updated in the case questionnaire. So long as you notify the legal team, then they will make an internal case note to ensure your new address is captured.

Notify USCIS of your residential address change

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) launched a tool on October 12, 2023, that allows customers to more easily update their residence address with USCIS. The tool is available to most users with a USCIS online account and will allow them to update their address in a single place, improving the speed and efficiency of notifying USCIS of a residence address change.

Please note that all non-citizens in the U.S. are legally required to keep USCIS informed of any change of address within 10 days of their move by completing an Alien Change of Address Card (Form AR-11). To update your address with USCIS, you may utilize the following options:

  1. Update via MyUSCIS:
    Log in to your MyUSCIS account and update your address in your profile. The changes will automatically apply to all pending forms with USCIS. You may create or access your account at https://my.uscis.gov/
  2. File Form AR-11 Online:  You can file AR-11 electronically on the USCIS official site at https://egov.uscis.gov/coa/displayCOAForm.do

Before using the online change of address tool, you should have the following information available:

  • USCIS Receipt Notice Number(s) (if you have any pending cases with the USCIS); please note that you will only need to provide receipt numbers for cases that you personally signed. Do not provide receipt numbers for cases that your employer signed, such as H-1B, L-1, or I-140 cases, as this will cause an error in the submission of the AR-11 form;
  • New and old addresses;
  • Names and biographical information for family members for whom you have filed a petition.

💡 If you have a pending case, it is critical that you enter your case's receipt number. Please note, however, that you should not list the receipt number for any cases filed by your employer on Form I-129 or Form I-140 (such as H-1B, L-1, and I-140 cases), as these are cases filed by your employer on your behalf. Moreover, your change of address will not affect those types of cases, as all notices issued by the USCIS are sent to us as your attorneys, and to your employer.

When you are done with the AR-11, you will be provided an AR-11 confirmation number. Because this confirmation number can be used as legal proof that USCIS was notified to make an address change on your case, please make sure that you keep a record of your confirmation number(s).
